Make-A-Wish Update

On August 31st Allied received a letter from the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a sponsorship report on the most recent wish fulfilled using our donations. Because of your continued support of Allied’s efforts for Make-A-Wish, Andrew from Philadelphia got his wish to attend Baseball Camp in Nebraska. Already a talented catcher, he was one of 100 catchers chosen for the camp based on that talent and Make-A-Wish made it possible for him to attend by paying the camp’s fee and a week’s accommodation in Nebraska. He also received a limo ride to and from the airport, spending money and more.Everyone at Allied is truly thankful for your continued support. Without you we could not possibly give as much as we do to Make-A-Wish. While there are still so many children who deserve to get their wish, thank you so much for helping us grant this one!

Alpha Wire Adds New 3 Conductor to V Series

Alpha Wire has added a new VFD cable to their product catalog.  They have expanded their already popular V series cables with a new 3-conductor version. Specifically designed for variable frequency drives (VFD), Alpha’s V series cables minimize the problems that can arise from harmonics, corona discharges, and power distortion. The new 3-conductor version provides the same benefits in a smaller package, which can help reduce costs over the larger versions.

3-Conductor V Series Cables are available from 16 AWG 16 to 4/0 AWG and feature cross-linked polyethylene insulation for corona resistance, low capacitance and a symmetrical design for more flexibility. All gauge sizes feature overall shielding for EMI protection: aluminum/polyester/aluminum foil and copper braid with 85% coverage for gauges 16 to 4, and double-layer copper table for the larger gauges. They are also standard approved for UL Types TC-ER, 1000-V Motor Supply Cable, and XHHW-2 among others.

Please visit http://www.awcwire.com/alphawireRFQ.aspx to submit an RFQ for any Alpha products, including their new 3-Conductor V Series cables.

Good News From the Front!

130-degrees-in-al-asad

We had previously been hoping for a September return, but Lance Corporal Craig Smith has returned to the states even more ahead of schedule! He arrived on US soil Sunday night, August 23rd. His family, including Dad (Allied Sales Rep, Craig Smith), was on hand to welcome him home.

After some routine debriefing, he will get to enjoy some much deserved time off over the Labor Day holiday.

Welcome Home, LC Smith!

How Wind Turbines Work

With the new addition of Wind Turbine Cables to our product line, it’s time to take a look at how wind power is generated. Let’s start with a quick science lessen.

The wind is powered by the sun. The sun’s rays hit the atmosphere, but not uniformly across the whole planet. Because of this, the atmosphere’s temperature varies across the globe. Add in the rotation and the different topography of the Earth and a lot of other meteorological science and you get wind! Nothing we do makes the wind blow, and so harnessing the power of the wind is harnessing a truly renewable infinite resource.

Cutaway of a wind turbine

Wind turbines are constructed from a few basic components: blades (1), tower (2), yaw drive and motor (3) and the nacelle(10), which houses the brake (4), low-speed shaft (5), gear box (6), generator (7), high-speed shaft (8) and controller (9). Of course, running down the tower and throughout the nacelle are all the various Wind Turbine Cables you get from your friends at Allied!

So, the turbine is built and the wind is blowing. What happens now? The wind turns the blades of the turbine, which then set into motion the internal machinery of the turbine. The energy of the turning blades force the low-speed shaft to turn, which causes the gears to turn as well, only now at a higher speed. It is this kinetic energy of the high speed gears that powers up the generator. Now, the energy produced inside the generator can either be stored in a battery, or run down the tower of the turbine through cables (again, from Allied!) and to the local power grid.

That’s basically how wind turbines work, with the physics and mechanics boiled down to the nitty-gritty minimum of course.

Update on Allied Salesman’s Marine Son

Back in April, we let you know that Allied Salesman Craig Smith’s son, Lance Corporal Craig Smith, was deployed to Iraq for a 7 month tour.  Keep your fingers crossed, because we’ve just received word that he could be returning home as early as September!  Plans could change from now until then, so we’ll update as soon as we learn more.

For now, check out this great group shot of Lance Corporal Smith and his entire company, taken on July 5th.

Local State Representative Visits Our Headquarters!

Thursday afternoon, May 21st, we had a visitor to our Collegeville Headquarters.  State Representative Mike Vereb received our press release that announced the addition of Mike Autry, Ben Ficken, Chuck Crane and David Smith and wanted to personally commend Allied on our recent hiring practices. ”It was great to visit Allied,” Rep. Vereb said, ”and see firsthand a family owned business grow in such tough economic times.”

All of us at Allied would like to thank Rep. Vereb for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come by.
