Marine Deployment

About a month ago, we updated you all on Allied’s Craig Smith and his visit to see his son before his deployment.  Lance Corporal Craig Smith was deployed to Iraq on Tuesday morning, April 21st.  This is his first tour, and it will be for 7 months.  Before they left, the family had breakfast and lunch together and even met some of his buddies they’d heard so much about.

They departed around 2am, and Mom and Dad were on hand to see them off.  They will be flying to connecting destinations before reaching Iraq, where he will be a convoy escort.

The entire Allied Family will be keeping Lance Corporal Smith and the entire armed forces in our thoughts and prayers.

Make-A-Wish Update

Allied Wire & Cable has been supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® for several years now, and it’s always very gratifying to receive news about how our contributions have been used.

On April 14th a letter arrived to our headquarters that detailed how our recent contributions had granted the wishes for two children in the Philadelphia area.

A 13-year-old boy’s wish was to meet the Philadelphia Phillies.  He was flown to Clearwater, FL, where he met the team during spring training.  Raul Ibanez gave him a personal tour of the clubhouse and threw to him for batting practice, where Milt Thompson gave him some hitting tips.  He was also made the honorary bat boy for the game.

A 16-year-old boy’s wish was for a laptop computer.  This type of wish is very rare, only 2% select it.  Not only did he receive a brand new computer, he also received a printer, accessories, games, software and a computer desk with a chair.  The family was also provided installation and tutorial services at their convenience, and a party was thrown to celebrate the delivery.

Without you our contributions could not have been made, and we would like to share part of the thank you letter we received:

“It has been said that doctors provide the medicine and Make-A-Wish offers the magic and the hope for a future.  On behalf of the children whose wishes provided huge smiles, long hugs, tears of happiness, and vivid memories, we extend heartfelt thanks to you for helping to share the power of a wish®.”

Thank you to everyone that helped make these contributions possible!

Allied Marine Update!

Allied’s Craig Smith recently had the opportunity to visit his son, Lance Corporal Craig Smith, at Camp Lejeune, NC. The younger Craig is an M1A1 Tank crewman, making use of the M1A1 wires his dad’s company supplies (That would be Allied!). In addition to wires used in the M1A1, Allied also supplies wire and cable used to produce the radios in the tanks and humvees. Check out some of the Mil-Spec wire Allied supplies here, like M13486, which is used in the MRAP program and MIL-C-85485, which is used to absorb EMI.

In April of this year, Lance Corporal Smith is due to be deployed to Iraq. His family, girlfriend and beloved ’90 Mustang will miss him greatly while he’s away.

March Madness is Here!

Football season is over, and it’s not quite time for baseball yet…which means it’s that time of year again!  The tournament of all tournaments is here, where the pros of the future get a chance to show their stuff to the entire country.  It also means … March Madness Pools!

For the second annual Allied Wire and Cable Basketball Pool, things are going to work a little differently.  Instead of downloading and printing a bracket, we have an online program that makes the process quick and easy.  All you have to do is click on your pick for all the games of each round and the team’s name will advance.  If you change your mind, just click on the other team’s name and your pick will be replaced. The last step is to guess the total points scored amount and click “Submit.”

Click here to fill in your bracket!

Just like during the game, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  • The tournament is open to anyone in purchasing or engineering at a qualifying company.
  • There is a limit of one entry per person.  If you submit multiple entries, the most recent will be used.
  • The cut-off time is before the tip-off of Game 1 at 12:20PM on Thursday March 19th. Make sure you get your picks in on time!
  • Points will be given for each correct pick throughout the tournament:
    • Round 1 – 1 Point
    • Round 2 – 2 Points
    • Sweet Sixteen – 4 Points
    • Elite Eight – 8 Points
    • Final Four – 16 Points
    • Championship – 32 Points
  • The winner will be the player with the most points at the end of the tournament. In the case of a tie, the player who guesses the total points score the closest without going over wins.

And of course, everyone’s favorite part…The Prizes!

  • One GRAND PRIZE winner will receive a brand-new HDTV!
  • Two RUNNERS-UP will receive an iPod!
  • Weekly winners will receive Allied Prize Packs!

Click here to fill in your bracket!

If you have trouble with the program, you can still download a copy of the bracket and make your picks the old fashioned way.  Just click on the link to download a blank bracket and fax it back to 484-928-6720 or e-mail it to basketball@awcwire.com.

Good Luck!

The MRAP Program & M13486 Cable

The US Military’s newest line of vehicular defense is MRAP, or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected, vehicles.  These vehicles are specially designed to survive IED (improvised explosive device) attacks, which are currently the leading killer of the US Military in
Iraq.  The survival rate for soldiers in MRAP vehicles improves drastically.

The MRAP program is gaining favor quickly, and companies with these contracts are rapidly increasing production to meet growing demand.  For obvious reasons, the individual components of MRAP vehicles, for either ground or air, must be extremely tough.  They will be put to the ultimate test again and again.

The M13486 wire series is approved for MRAP applications.  M13486 is a heavy-duty, low-tension cable often used in ground vehicles or aircraft.  It is offers extremely high flexibility across a broad temperature range and is very durable, providing excellent resistance against abrasion, weather, fungus, and fluids.  This resistance makes it good for exposed applications, including the underside of MRAP military vehicles.

Allied Wire & Cable maintains an extensive stock of M13486 cable at great prices, available in both small and large quantities.  If you’re looking for military-approved wire and cable products for use in MRAP vehicles, contact Allied for a competitive price quote today.
